Contrary to what many people assume, there is no single, nationwide taxi price in Germany. Taxi fares are set by the respective cities or districts – usually via an official taxi fare regulation.

This means:

• Taxi companies are required to apply these prices

Negotiating the price is not allowed, because these are officially approved mandatory fares.

In Germany, a taxi fare usually consists of several fixed components:

🚕 Base fare

The base fare is charged once at the start of the ride. It covers the provision of the vehicle and can vary significantly by city.

📏 Distance rate

The distance rate is charged during the trip. Many tariffs use tiers, for example:

• a rate for the first kilometres
• a different rate beyond a certain distance

⏱️ Waiting time

If the taxi is stuck in traffic or waits at the passenger’s request, waiting time is charged. This is usually billed per minute or per hour and can noticeably increase the total fare.

In many cities, different rates apply depending on the time of day. Possible examples include:

• night surcharges
• weekend or public holiday rates
• special late-evening rates

For rides whose destination lies outside the mandatory service area, price agreements are generally possible. In this case, a fixed price or different fare can be agreed with the driver or taxi company before the ride starts. The agreement must be clear and made in advance—later changes are not permitted. Without an explicit agreement, the regular tariff still applies and the ride is billed via the taximeter.
